I posted on Jan.1, 2024 this year! I will try to post more regularly this year is my goal this year!!!
So at the Hartt School, first 2 weeks of January is usually Winter break, but selected dancers are back working with 2 choreographers. This year, these wonderful artists are here with them. Tamisha Guy and Robert De La Cruz III.
Choreographers came to the school, gave auditions, Freshman class to Senior class - all of them took this audition, casted them. Just like any other companies. Selected dancers come back right after Christmas, to attend this Spring Repertory Workshop. You will take warm up class- usually ballet. then rehearsal starts. 6 hours of rehearsal to create new works. This is how "you" as a professional dancer will experience when you start working with the company. No academic study but DANCE, practically DANCE ALL DAY. You will learn how to take care of yourself - over all area. Food, Body, Mind... yes Mind! you have to remember all new movements and counts and patterns and, and...
Tamisha A. Guy
A native of Trinidad and Tobago, began her formal dance
training at Ballet Tech, under the direction of Eliot Feld. Later she
attended Fiorello H. La Guardia High School, and SUNY Purchase
College as a double major in dance and arts management.
In 2013 Guy graduated with honors from SUNY Purchase College
and joined the Martha Graham Dance Company shortly after.
In 2016 Guy was selected as one of Dance Magazine' Top 25 to
Watch and she also received the 2016 Princess Grace Award.
In 2017, she was named one of the Best Dancer's of the Year by
Dance Europe. In 2021, she received the 2022 Vilcek Prize for
Creative Promise in Dance. Tamisha currently dances with A.I.M,
under Artistic Director Kyle Abraham, which she joined in 2014.
Norbert De La Cruz III
Born in the Philippines and raised in Los Angeles, California,
Norbert De La Cruz III is recognized for his versatility in performance and choreography. His movement practice is shaped by his
training experiences from the Gabriella Foundation, LA County High
School for the Arts, Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, received a B.F.A. in Dance from the Juilliard School followed by and M..F.A. in
dance from Hollins University.
Professional, Robert has performed as a soloist with the
Metropolitan Opera's production of Aida, Aszure Barton & Artists
in Germany & Australia(Blue Soup & Busk), Balletto Teatro di
Torino(Italy), Joe Goode Performance Group, Sydney Skybetter &
Associates, Santa Clarita Ballet, Lustig Dance Theatre, Boca Tuya,
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Complexions Contemporary Ballet.
This is just an introduction so please visit their website!!!
So
They are creating!!! Norbert is creating a beautiful Contemporary Ballet on point, and Tamisha Contemporary Dance. Their movements are so interesting!!! Their use of weight, arms, backs..... ONLY IF I WERE YOUNG DANCER...
I didn't take any pictures during work, but after open rehearsal,
2 choreographers spent a little time with guests. Many questions
from guests, and Norbert and Tamisha's response was great!!!
Dancers wanted to know too. So we had a lunch with
choreographers.
Dancers had questions. Senior dancers, off course are curious
about HOW, What, and so on. It was nice to hear dancers'
interests and their responses.
BE KIND
Both of them, expressed, as a human, you need to be kind.
Kindness is something we forget when you are in hard time, or just forget in any time. You can not try to be nice/kind but you need to practice KIND BEING. so that it will penetrating.
Both of them, as I watched the rehearsals, never raise their voices, give dancers time to digest/respond and give them some room to experience.
Beside beautiful movements, it is great to watch them work.
Norbert has to leave so I took this picture! Everybody's face describe their happiness and appreciation!!!
AND I am working on two big projects. One is Martha Graham Dance Technique Level 3 and the other is creating "Suite of Dances - From Canticle for Innocent Comedians". The work Martha created in 1952, "Canticle for Innocent Comedians", the company revived in 1960's and then 1987, my first year with the company. Yuriko put this work together. She invited some of dancers who danced this work, brought them to the studio, taught us what they did, and remembered. It was a beautiful experience with many dancers that you admired and saw on video. I danced Chorus who danced interludes to 8 elements. and Also I got to dance a section called "Stars". I danced with Mario Camacho who now teaches in Holland.
I am very anxious and excited about this work. I am working with 2 composers Kathryn Swanson and Lief Ellis. I remember this beautiful chorus/group dances. Sometimes I teach this group sections for repertory classes. Once I put shorter version together, and it was about 10 mins of dancing. If you are interested to see it, please let me know!!!
Oh well, I am now off to observe Tamisha's rehearsal.Have a wonderful day everybody!!!

Miki and Stephen in 2023
It was an active year to say the least! Here are a few of the highlights, only to give you a starting point for a real live, person to person, exchange should the new year provide such a luxury. We would embrace it (and you) warmly and eagerly!
Top L: Berlin, Top R:NAC, Mid L: with Diana,Mid R: Graham Gala, Bot L: Graduation, and Garden Apples
January found us in Berlin, ringing in 2023 with friends and former colleagues while I was at work with her Berlin-based "Dance On Ensemble". As soon as I was back in NYC I went to work presenting the story of her life in dance at the National Arts Club in NYC. MY fan club of younger generation Graham dancers was in attendance and all were enthralled! In March I then went to work coaching the internationally celebrated ballet star, Diana Vishneva, in Graham's "Deep Song". I then set and coached a group of our Hartt students who we brought to The Joyce Theater to perform "Primitive Mysteries" with the Graham Company's NY season. May brought the graduation and immediate professional placement of another amazing group of Hartt Dance seniors and in June, our community garden apple tree was produced its most robust crop in years allowing me to give bushels of this deliciousness to the neighborhood and Hell's Kitchen passersby.
Throughout the year our lives were enriched by many friends of all ages, from 2 weeks to 9 decades! I was able to have a wonderful visit with SP's first major dance mentor/teacher, Betty Toman, just before she passed at 98. Her presence in SP's life made all that he has done in the field of Dance possible. It is not an overstatement to say that Betty changed his life. We are so very grateful for all we get to learn from all of them, young and old, and how our lives and relationships continue to grow and develop in the most rewarding ways.
Speaking of relationships, SP's summer was spent mostly in Europe starting with the celebration of 50 years of John Neumeier's Hamburg Ballet. 250 dancers attended! His 9 years there was a significant chapter in his life, and it was terrific to catch up with friends and colleagues and even have the chance to sit and talk with John a bit. From there he was off to London to teach for Rambert Ballet and reconstitute an urban garden in the center of London. Then, Copenhagen to visit with friends, reconnecting with another of his former hometowns. A trip to Sweden brought him close to a dear friend and allowed him to create a rose trellis from hand split cedar as his gift. He headed down to Amsterdam next to teach and introduce another cohort of Hartt Dancers to the wonders of that fantastic city and the International Festival of Contemporary Dance. All this while I was in Japan twice dancing the work of Akiko Kanda and the work of my mentor, Nanako, at her memorial.
Our fall semester at Hartt has started extraordinarily well with a fantastic group of dancers and faculty. I was pushing her group further forward than I have ever done before. SP's seniors decided to all dress like him for Halloween, including bald heads! We took a group to Lincoln Center to see the Paul Taylor Company and three Hartt alumni in the company came out between shows to talk with the students. It gave a powerful message of continuity and possibility. SP thoroughly enjoyed choreographing for and directing our fall concert. Bournonville, Limón, and three new works were on the program and while it seems hard to believe, the program seems to continue to proceed from strength to strength. We were named among the 20 "Best College Dance Programs" by DanceUS for the 5th year in a row! We got to celebrate on the island of Tenerife where I had been performing and SP got to join me. That was a true Thanksgiving! Incredible climate, views, history, and FOOD!
We are looking forward to an exciting 2024 and we hope that it brings us all a little closer together. We will keep you informed so please know we'd love to meet up with you!Much love and gratitude with all our best wishes for the year ahead!

15 minutes of Fame, and Nanako Yamada Memorial Concert.
Last year was a hard year fro me, I lost my dance mentors. Yuriko, Susan Kikuchi andNanako Yamada.
Today, I would like to talk about Nanako Yamada.
I studied modern dance with her from i was 10-18 years old. She is an inspiration for me. She was born and lived Japanese modern dance history. The day before she passed, I had a video chat, and she was dancing with her hands on her bed.

Her dancers and staff created Memorial Concert(#1,2), and I performed Seiko Takata's Mother (1938) which I learn from Nanako,(#3) and she coached me - that was the last
work that I learn from her.

#4: I also dance a solo that i put some movement together that I remember from her choreography. I used Nanako's best friend Sachiko Yoshiwara's poem - recording of her self reading. Sachiko wrote this poem "Ano Hito (that person)" when her mother passed away. When Sachiko passed away, they played this at the funeral, Nanako cried so much. And now I danced with this recording. I wanted to have Sachiko being a part of Nanako's memorial.
#5: At the performance, they played the video of Nanako's workshop at the Hartt School from Resonance 3. You can see Stephen danced with Nanako. So he was a part of it
too!!!
Many dance artists, friends...So nice to re-connect with them!
My first dance teacher Chizu Shoda, and Ritsuko Tsumaki who also performed

It was fun event
ONOKORO by Tokyo to New York, was really nice.
The first time I met this mask was when I performed with Theatre of Yugen production of Mystical Abyss by Yuriko Doi. It is a Noh Mask but not usual one. It is Tsukiyomi, and shape is very different from the traditional. I fall in love with this mask. This Summer, I met an artist who made this mask, and he said " Mask needs to be used to be alive" so I decided to rent this if possible. Theatre of Yugen was so nice that I was able to rent it. BEAUTIFUL!!! and I am so inspired by it. I had an image and idea how to use it, it really made sense for me.
ONOKORO is the sound and name of creating Island of Japan. from Kojiki - oldest story of creation of Japan. There are many GODS involved. Izanami and Izanagi, the first
couple making Islands of Japan. So I asked beautiful dancer Ghislaine van den Heuvel to dance with me. We created an island.
Wonderful Costume designer Karen Young created beautiful vision!
And music written by Masatora Goya and played by string quinted and Hichiriki played by Thomas Piercy. Thomas and I started to talk about this music about one year ago, and finally we created!!!
Please read Oberon's Grove for our review!
It's still going this Fall, I will be going to Rome(Dance On Ensemble) and Tenerife (dancing Deep Song). I am so grateful.
Thank you for reading all these. I wanted to let you know that I am still dancing a little. Have a wonderful FALL!!!

In May, I involved a theater work, The Beautiful Lady -written by Elizabeth Swados, and directed by Anne Bogart. I really wanted to work with Anne, so this was heaven!!!
It is an amazing group of actors(they sing beautifully!!) and subject matter is so timely. Hope this work will travel! I have never been in theater work like this, talented actors and entire team.. just wonderful production. La MaMa theatre was perfect!!!

DANCE ON ENSEMBLE , we performed "Mellowing" in Utrecht, Holland.
Choreographed by Christos PapadopoulosWe will be performing in Rome in November!!!
I guested Dance Archives in Japan 2023
Danced Akiko Kanda's work " To Martha".
Akiko danced with Marhta Graham in 1960's and this is her work honoring, remembering Martha. I met Akiko few times in NY, but this time, thru her dance, I learn and got to know her a little bit more. Rehearsal period was few weeks in Tokyo, everyday I run this and I was dead everyday... felt so good dancing that physically in my age. Sweat- drenched with sweat felt good.
I had live music, that was so nice too!!!
A Japanese Dancer in America
And back in NYC, I taught one week at Graham School's Summer Intensive then went to University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign to set Martha's "Steps In The Street", dancers worked really hard and they look GOOD! I can't wait to see them in October!!!
at UI, I presented A Japanese Dancer in America, Power point that I made and presented at the National Arts Club in Feb. It is my path from my birth to who I am now. It was nice to re-visit my path with pictures!!!
NuVu Festival @ LPAC

HARTT DANCES (click for streaming) @ Lincoln Theatre
This year started with busy schedule.
After coming back from Berlin, I had a presentation at the National Arts Club in NYC. It was a great event for me to go back to see my youth to now. I filmed with my iPhone, so it’s not that great quality but if you are interested, please let me know!
And now in April, I am curating and directing NuVu Festival. We will present 5 artists. Exciting to see this concert is forming with works of Janis Brenner, Gabrielle Lamb, Michelle Thompson Ulerich, Mikaela Papasodero and Nai-Ni Chen.
Sadly Nai-Ni passed away December 2021. We want to honor her life. Nai-Ni and I came to NYC around the same time. We had very different path. We met about 10 years ago, probably crossed path a little here and there, and we started to know each other. She started CrossCurrent festival - Asian American Choreographer’s competition and she asked me to be on the panel. During pandemic, she started to give free classes online, she made many project so that keep giving her dancers chance to keep going. She is not a flashy person but concrete.
NuVu Festival is a place for different stages of dance artists to share a stage together. For young artists, they can learn by watching how mature artists deal with stage crew, how they work with their dancers. And for mature artists, they get to see young artists' vision.
I want this festival to be a great place for every artists and for the audience to encounter different stages of artists' work and inspired.
AND
The Hartt School where Stephen and I teach, will have Hartt Dances. Dancers will dance Bounonville, Jose Limon and new works by Steven Melendez, and Pascal Rioult’s work DRIFT with LIVE Chamber Music. It is exciting to see Live music and dance come together. It will be streamed so PLEASE WATCH!!!

This March, my mentor Yuriko passed away. She was 102. She had a beautiful full life. Even with her hard times, she always said " i have a good life". Past Thursday, we celebrated her life at 92nd Y Kaufmann Theater where she had her company performed in 40's.
There were 12 speakers, each one of us had a theme to talk. I talked about Martha Graham Ensemble.
So many friends were there in person and virtual. There was everyone's love to celebrate Yuriko, it was a beautiful evening.
Until this year, I have never wanted to set Martha's Primitive Mysteries, the first Martha's Ballet I have ever danced in 1984. But this year, I said yes. It is a most beautiful ballet, but the hardest one.
Stephen is choreographing a new work!!! Music is very challenging but they are having a great time. We went to a dance/ music concert and we discover this composer Caroline Shaw.

Dear All,
Seems like SPRING is almost here in NY! I saw magnolia blooming in our community garden. It is a beautiful tree and it’s all pink!
Right now, we are preparing for HARTT DANCES. Stephen and I are setting Jacqulyn Buglisi's work, which we were a part of original 15 dance artists and it is so nice to re-visit this wonderful work. Lots of memories.
